Code.org believes "Every student in every school should have the opportunity to learn computer science." I heard a report this morning which said that only 10% of schools in the U.S. teach computer skills, yet so many jobs going forward involve interaction with computers to some degree. Our school systems are "behind the times," and www.code.org aims to change that. They offer free into courses, and more. See code.org/help

Healthy, that would be a real concern, if 'only 10% of schools in the U.S. teach computer skills'? Here in Australia, computer skills/ ICT is defined in the curriculum as a 'general capability', alongside literacy and numeracy. Where ICT is used in all learning areas. So that it is quite likely a 100% here?

Eoffg, the report I heard on the news said much of the problem in the U.S. is due to a lack of teachers who are qualified to actually teach STEM subjects (Science, Technology/Computing, Engineering, Math) as well as the fact that there is a lack of time in the school day to cover what's already expected, such as math and Reading. I know many schools have stopped teaching cursive writing, and they DO have "computer labs" where they teach keyboarding, however Code.org is emphasizing that people need to understand software, too.
