In what can only be described as a surprise encounter, I was exchanging "small talk" with a new person in my Pilates exercise session at the local YMCA. She mentioned having just had a baby 10 weeks ago, and so she was trying different classes, to get back in shape. I'd overheard her tell another lady that she was a teacher, so I asked where she worked, and that's when she said she used to teach math in a local elementary school, but she was presently associated with University of Chicago, doing curriculum development for their Everyday Math program!!
I know there have been numerous criticisms about the program, not only here on Millermoms, but by other parents of children who DON'T have learning issues. I really didn't "get" certain aspects of it, either (like "lattice math") when my son was exposed to it in elementary school. The woman was rushing to get her child out of daycare, so there wasn't more of an opportunity to talk in detail and ask her about WHY certain aspects of the program are presented in the way that they are, but I'm hoping to run into her again, and will share more information if I can!
