Hi - i just joined. I posted in another forum about 504/IEP issues. Long story short, my 8 yo son has mild Tourettes w/ ADHD - super sweet kid, no behavior problems, just a lot of cheerful energy and daydreaming. 3rd grade has been tough, he just can't focus on the work and was starting to get low grades. I finally bit the bullet and put him on ADHD meds. Intuniv. This is day 4 and he is a child zombie :-[While I see a def improvement in his school work (way more independence in homework, brought home a good reading test grade etc) I can't get over it. This is not my child. He's sleeping again right now. He could barely get through tennis (his passion and talent). I am at a loss, I know these things can take a while, but how long? Should I call the dr? ugh.

Every child responds differently to medications. Sleepiness can be a side effect of Intuniv. Since you describe your son as zombie-like and it does seem to be having a negative impact on your son's normal activities like tennis, you could call the doctor. I'm guessing he'll decrease the dosage.

just a small update. I called today and dr says we need to give it at least a week. So after school, zombie child seems to be gone Yay! did not nap, very alert etc... actually more talkative than usual w/ more complicated vocabulary words too. I do notice a reduction in tics though. whew, that was just scary. I hope he stays this way.

I'm glad your son is better, and that you called the doctor as well. Unfortunately, another drawback when you're just starting ADHD medications is that sometimes, if a child is coming down with a cold or some other illness, you may not be sure if a symptom like sleepiness or an upset stomach is a reaction to the med, or if it's something else. In this case, maybe your son was "under the weather" for a reason that just happened to coincide with beginning Intuniv, but in any case, I hope the improved response continues!

still better today. Big test will be tomorrow at tennis tourny. Today, he even had a few of his milder tics come out. I know it sounds weird, but I am so glad to see it. Like all of us, I want school etc to be easier for him, but don't want his unique spirit hidden either. Being a mom is just not easy is it?

If this helps, i have a 7 & 9 yr old on intuniv 3 mg, love it no complaints. Great in school, and exvellent report cards. My oldest daughter has a severe case of hyperactivity,.nd implusivness, this med works great. Been using for twoor more yrs. I hate stimulants,.i wont give them. Tried a few nd had my daughter with heart problem complaints, very scary, i wont use. Intuniv works great! Her meds 3mg intuniv in a.m. Nd clonidine .1 @eight thirty p.m. This helps everything. My daughter is so hyper without meds she wont sleep, maybe three to four hours, turns into ugly battles, nd her teacher would complain she doses off in reading.these meds. Really saved us nd work miracles!
