My ds9, I feel is having a reaction to orap! He was weaned off risperdal and prozac carefully to add orap to his routine along w. Concerta and focalin, intiniv @ night. This wk he started orap, and he is hyper beyond belief! He got in trouble 2x this wk in school, something he never ever does. I think its a concerta-orap reaction and am stopping the orap as of tomorrow. The dr office is closed and since we only started orap 5days ago, I don't feel that much harm will be done but wow, id rather have his minor tics back and my good mannered boy back. Anybody else?  |

kittykat, I'd like to welcome you to this forum, but I wish it was under better circumstances for your son. I had not heard of orap, but a google search on Drugs.com says it's short for "Orapred" and is in a class of drugs called steroids. Orapred prevents the release of substances in the body that cause inflammation. There are many drugs that can interact with steroids, so your son could indeed be having some kind of reaction, but I'm confused about why you made the comment about "rather have his minor tics back?" Did the doctor originally prescribe the Orap in order to reduce his tics???

Yes he has vocal tics and facial tics...his ocd was obnoxious but I feel like id rather have that back rather than this behavior..orap is an anti phychotic like risperdal but sronger but used for tics now...my poor boy is a complete mess lately

WHOA!!! www.rxlist.com/orap-drug.htm says that Orap is Pimozide, an antipsychotic, HOWEVER www.drugs.com/orapred.html said that "orap" was short for Orapred, which is Prednisolone, and that's a steriod! I can't help but wonder how the doctor wrote out the prescription, and whether the pharmacy filled it correctly, since this appears to be a case of two very different drugs with very similar names??? I modified the title of your post, with the hope that more people see the topic and will respond.

I wish I had some good advice advice, but just wanted to say that from one parent of a kid on multiple meds to another, I understand your frustration.
I always say that if the side effects are worse than the symptoms we are trying to treat, it is time to make a change.
One thing you might check is whether your doctor's office has a number you can call to get a response when they are closed. My son's psychiatrist has several different numbers depending on the situation - one goes to his personal cell/voicemail where he will call you back same day and one is an emergency contact number where you can have him paged. I have rarely used it but when the meds are causing problems, that is a situation where I call the voicemail line even if it is the weekend.
