socal, oh gee.... at my house whip cream is a major food group! When the girls would have their sleep overs, I had to get a can for each person... yuck! Of course they learned to love that stuff because their Grandmother has always made it from scratch!

It's a great time to start making quick breads for lunch boxes.... definite comfort food and sneaky way to get in extra servings of fruit and vegies. The best recipe I've found so far is the basic one in the Betty Crocker cookbook (the big red and white checkered one).... there's one for nuts and one for lemon.... very, very easy (5 minutes to mix up in one bowl and one measuring cup, no mixer needed). Makes the house smell great too! Jessica came up with a great idea last week... it's a little messy but oh, well. She was making fancy caramel apples for a bake sale at Ted's school. She got bored at the end and sliced the apples into quarters, then dipped and decorated them without sticks. They sell the caramels in bags of dots now, so you can measure and use smaller amounts at a time and it melts much easier. I also learned last night that if you grocery shop at Target during the hour before closing the put out a whole rack of bakery goodies for $1-2 an item. (Yes, I didn't get the grocery shopping done over the weekend, so I had to go last night.) Thought I'd toss this link up: www.bettycrocker.com/coupons-promotions/coupons/default.aspx?WT.ac=homepage_05-01-2008In addition, when I went to the homepage it let me request a coupon book....

I tried something great for hot lunches this week (and it's not bad room temperature either):
Spaghetti Squash is running about $1 apiece right now. I got a nice sized one yesterday. I cut off a 1 inch slice (give or take). Drop it in a small bowl with a couple of tablespoons of water and cover. Pop it in the Microwave for about 5 minutes. Use a fork (twisting) and remove from skin. It comes out just like Spaghetti. Mix in some butter (use the real stuff), salt and pepper. You can also sprinkle on chili, season salt, Mrs Dash, or a dash of Tabasco.... It works very well for left overs and packed lunches!
In the meantime, I've been noticing that the produce at the local markets is getting pretty "picked over" these days and the meat choices are getting more limited, however, for some reason, Costco has been keeping their quality up and the prices decent on both fronts.
It's a great time to put an extra turkey (or turkey breast) in the freezer to use for lunches after the holidays. If you're cooking a turkey anyway, get a little bit larger one, slice and freeze. Drop the bones into a big ziplock for a big pot of soup later.

We always cook a big turkey so we have leftovers.

Pick it to death! It's great for all kinds of casseroles or in a tortilla with some fresh vegies.

Even though its nearly summer, I found a really good coupon link for Kraft Foods this morning. Almost everything offered are things I use weekly or monthly: www.kraftfoods.com/kf/kraftcoupons.aspx

>My brother in law started the Nuttela thing with the kids, but they were supposed to tell me it was made from broccoli< Have you seen the commercials for that? My oldsest ds and I were watching it as they spead it on a piece of bread! It is dark brown and smooth looking ..to put it delicately, we were totally grossed out!! Hope it tastes better than it looks.

Kewpie, I love Nutella! It is a delicious, smooth chocolate & nuts spread that tastes great on a slice of bread, croissant or eaten alone (it has only approx 10% fat - compared to chocolate that usually has about 50% fat). Think of it as chocolate truffle spread - don't imagine other things . It is the peanut butter of Europe. Kids would usually have no problem to eat a chocolate sandwich for breakfast. It is really very good. I can eat it alone with a spoon . Of course, anything with sugar is not the best choice, but if you add a cup of milk to it (for protein) - things look better. Mornings are tough as my kid is not into food at all, especially early in the morning and still, I have to make sure she eats something.
