Dr. Steven Goldman of the Center for Translational Neuromedicine, at both the University of Copenhagen and the University of Rochester was lead author of the study. Goldman believes that the findings of his study suggest that abnormalities and dysfunction of glial cells could be instrumental in the development of childhood-onset schizophrenia. The dysfunction of these cells, which leads to a breakdown in communication between individual cells and neural networks, may play a significant role in onset of the disease.
