I read about this product, which is currently in an Indiegogo campaign. It sounds promising:
Sprayable Sleep is a skin spray that claims to send users into a slumber within an hour without the side effects of typical sleeping pills...The product only has 3 ingredients — water, tyrosine (a natural amino acid), and melatonin. According to the company, melatonin pills can deliver an instant hit of the sleep-inducing chemical to the body, with the sometimes unwanted side effect of essentially being knocked out for several hours. Sprayable Sleep differs in its delivery method — by rubbing the spray into the skin, the body absorbs the chemical more slowly, mimicking the body’s naturally gradual release. Because of this, users need to spray about an hour before they intend to sleep. The company recommends 1 spray for a nap, 2 for a decent night’s sleep and 3 for a long-haul flight.

I found a link to it: sprayable.co/products/sprayable-sleepWhere it seems that the Tyrosine is what causes the slow release. But they fail to mention that Tyrosine is unsafe for people with Thyroid issues, given that it increases production of thyroid hormone Thyroxin and can result in Hyperthyroidism. It is also unsafe for people with high blood pressure, as it further increases it. But a contradiction with Tyrosine, is that a symptom of it is to keep a person wake. It is sometimes used to treat Narcolepsy.

That does seem odd, if "a contradiction with Tyrosine, is that a symptom of it is to keep a person wake." Of course, many people don't understand how stimulant medications can sometimes also be used to treat Narcolepsy, so perhaps the response is similar. Ideally, people who use sleep aid products of any kind are not relying on them every night, and so the side-effects (ie, thyroid impacts) are minimal.
