I remember having a discussion on this topic before, but couldn't find the thread. A new study by Elizabeth Ligon Bjork, UCLA psychologist, found that giving students a pretest in a collge course, which naturally they did not do well in, nonetheless helped them do better in her course by "enriching and altering memory."
