Very thought provoking and very worth listening to, a TED talk by Peter Gray, who has been studying play for years, on "The Decline of Play." "Children are rarely given the freedom to direct their own activities, leading to a persistent rise in children feeling that they have no control over their lives. And, while correlation doesn’t prove causation, Dr. Peter Gray, who has been studying play for years, says there’s strong evidence that in this case, the decline in play is leading to a rise in depression and acute anxiety among young people." blogs.kqed.org/mindshift/2014/06/can-free-play-prevent-depression-and-anxiety-in-kids/

In my case, I'm of the generation where your kids played soccer once a week and the rest was free play. As far as Sir Ray goes, we tried Tball, and as I've related before, he could be found in the outfield, turned around away from the action, looking for bugs in the grass. We did not sign up this year, LOL! I have had comments from some younger moms about 'what is he going to do this summer?' Well, he collects wood at camp, loves to swim in my brother's pool, play with kids at the local playgrounds and yep, that's about it.... his play when he's alone is fascinating to listen to. A very, very vivid imagination, ha ha! P.S. He does do Cub Scouts, so does that count, LOL?

Dihicks, your description of kids playing T-ball isn't unusual...when my son was Ray's age, my husband helped coach the team... There were lots of kids playing in the sand when they were supposed to be in the "infield," and looking for bugs in the outfield. I'll never forget the time when one boy got a hit, and proceeded to run to 3rd base, not realizing he was headed in the wrong direction to 1st. ( It wasn't my son, but maybe that kid was dyslexic, too?)

Healthy, that's funny.....my fav incident during tball was the two kids on Ray's team, third baseman and the shortstop and the ball came in between them. Neither one would relinquish the ball to the other and they ended up falling to the ground fighting to the death over who would get the ball! I was laughing so hard I couldn't see straight!!!
As I said before, Ray has a very vivid imagination, so the other day, I suggested that others might want to read his stories if he wrote them down. His reply? "I chop wood, I don't write stories..."
