Ever feel like you are going in circles, like you're on this big Merry-Go-Round? Following triennial testing & IEP meeting, I am looking over this years newly proposed goal for writing and they looked very familuar. I went back and we had for the most part the same goal in 2008 and 2011 at each of the triennials. I don't know if we need to just jump off this thing and be done with it.

Your son is now a Freshman in High School, right? I'm forgetting, is your school district "unified," that is, are the same administrators and such involved now, as when he was in grade/middle school? (Where I live, High Schools are a different entity, with their own psychologists and case workers, etc. and IEP's are completely redone as far as goals, etc.) When you ask if you need to just jump off and be done with it, are you saying to remove your son from the IEP all together? I wouldn't do that, just for the accommodations and legal protection an IEP is supposed to provide, versus a 504 or nothing at all. What kind of new remediation does the H.S. propose to use to meet the writing goals, since they haven't been met using past methodologies?

Yes he is Freshman. Out dist. is unified however each school has their own case manager which is also a resource teacher. However, I guess it is possible for the resource and case manager could be two different people especially in high school setting, so far resource and case manager have been the same person. Administrators are the same throughout K-12, however since my kids have started we have had several Superintendence and we are now on our third special ed. director. Current director has been with district as Program Manager. I would say IEP's are redone based on testing and need. Getting rid of IEP and placing him on 504 was brought up. I disagree with that and school psychologist did agree with me IEP needs to stay in place at this time. I feel like I am wasting my time and energy on working towards efforts of getting good goals in place on IEP when it seems that they are not being worked on anyway and everyone does what ever they want no matter what iep says. We started this year off with case manager/resource teacher telling me that she does not do one on one and even thought the iep stated he is to receive one on one it was not going to happen and she will knowingly and willingly be out of compliance on that. Just had an IEP meeting where the english teacher said she did not see any deficits in his writing and he is at grade level and working at a proficient level. According to testing there is major deficits in writing, so there were 2 goals proposed. What remediation?? Not sure. What was proposed was: 1. SDC class 2. Resource studies skills class. which might mean the teacher just has kids work on homework, they couldn't tell me how class would be conducted because it is up to the individual teacher. Like I said everyone does what ever they want, so it seems. 3. Everything in Gen. Ed. classes. How / what will be done to meet goals here? haven't a clue. If it can't be done in a resource studies skills how can it be done in gen. ed. class? On a positive note: He is doing really, really good in Alg. 1 class this year. I'll post more on this later and in another thread. It is very positive in this area right now!!!

I would love to document her statement about 1:1 in a letter and ask if she would like to explain that to the state..... If it were me and that is the district's attitude right off the bat, I would begin with the stAte instead of ending there. It's going to be very difficult to work with staff that have that attitude, besides, best defense is a good offense, lol!

The one on one stated in IEP is for math. Luckily he is doing very well this year and I at this point I don't see a need for one on one even though it is in the IEP. When I spoke to her was before begging of this school year when he was doing so poorly, getting zero's on all tests and failed the class. If there continued to be a problem, yes I would have then filed a complaint. Because I made a huge attempt to address the math issues before hand AND I would have agree'd to keep a close eye on the class they put him in instead of the one on one. But the attitude towards parent concern and documented struggles was very uncalled for. Anyway I don't think I can file a complaint on attitude, although I wish I could. That may solve half the battle. By the way, the one on one is still on the IEP with her signature. Because we came back into from another district (I pulled him for couple years) we had what she called an interim IEP meeting, where she made no changes to IEP services and then signed it. At that point I would have refused to sign if that had been taken out. So I guess it is documented?
