I know that will sound funny, but does anyone else's child have a fixation with looking at themselves in the mirror? When my son goes into the bathroom to brush his teeth, it takes him 5-10 minutes - usually more like 10 to finish. My husband and I know that he is spending most of the time looking at himself in the mirrow - making faces, etc. This is so frustrating! This is associated with his ADHD, right? ? I think i will start using a timer in the bathroom to help motivate him to get in and out quickly.

I'm not sure if that is entirely add realted, or not. I see plenty of kids smiling and making faces in mirrors at stores. My son was taking dance lessons (he loved to dance), but had to be removed because he couldn't stop staring at himself in the mirror! Yikes!

My dd LOVES to stare at herself in the mirror. But I am not sure if it is her ADD or she is just vain!! ha ha It takes her a long time to brush her teeth also, and I know she is looking at herself. She is beautiful though, so how can I blame her If it is a real hassle and causing fights then just move his toothbrush to a sink without a mirror, or have him do it in the shower/tub right before he gets out. Whatever works. nat

My daughter does that sometimes. But with her it's just admiring herself or trying out different hairstyles or facial expressions. We don't get on her about it because she, in particular, needs to become more aware of how she looks when she's responding to someone or having some emotion.

I remember spending hours in front of the mirror when I was in grade school, dancing and talking to myself. It was just a fun way to pass the time while I was alone. If your son is very social, he is probably just amusing himself so he can see what he looks like when he is making those faces at his friends! I think the timer is a good idea.
My nine year old is now snapping his fingers on a non-stop basis. Every time I look at him he is snapping. It's always something!

My 11 year old son does the same thing...mirrors, reflective windows, shiny pot lids...it drives me crazy! I find the timer helps a lot for many different situations...not sure why getting timed allows him to focus better and get the job done but am glad it works!
